hiv ‘conversion parties’

michael neal is on trial in the victorian county court for trying to infect other gay men with hiv without their knowledge.

middle-aged neal is alleged to have organised and participated in ‘conversion parties‘, aiming to ‘have more people come into the grip of HIV-infected people (and) to engage in unprotected … sex’ according to mark rochford who is prosecuting the case.

the case raises some interesting issues.  while neal’s actions are reprehensible, and the intentional transmission of a sexually transmitted disease is a criminal offence, should the men infected also bear a degree of responsibility for engaging in unprotected sex?

the trial continues…
